What about those of us that WANT to learn, try to learn, and stuff just goes in one ear and out the other? Info just isn't retained? I'm 45 and having one hell of a time in my current position retaining new information. I'm highly motivated to excel at my career, so I'm not making a conscious decision to stop learning. I understand everything presented for the most part, will ask questions if I need help etc, but I just can't seem to retain any of the info. A few days later, its gone from my mind like the sand through an hourglass. I'm truly worried at this point. My position really relies on having a good, and long memory, and if I can't retain new knowledge, I fear for my future.

Hey Robert, Thank you for the article!! I found it very interesting and can't help but agree. I'm still a young guy, but work with many older people at work and love to use Microsoft Excel to demonstrate the "choice to stop learning." Some of the older folks take time and learn how to use Excel AND USE IT JUST FINE!! Unfortunately, others simply ask me to do many little things like highlighting cells or bold text, because they think you have to be a "whiz" to use Excel. I try to show them the ropes and be patient, but they won't even the simplest things won't stick. I don't expect an older person to be quick with Excel, but I can tell when someone simply doesn't care to take the time to learn a simple tool. To all the old people in the working world, stop saying you're too old!! Excel has been out for 20+ years, make the choice to learn and quit wasting my time!
