I don’t know what you mean by commit. I’m having a hard time committing.

Robert Chen — Fri, 29 Dec 2017 06:09:50 +0000

Committing means working through each of the Core Exercises and giving an honest effort. It might mean having to step out of your comfort zone since you'll be taking action and engaging others.

I agree with Jeff Goins in The Art of Work that “the risk of not committing is greater than the cost of making the wrong choice. Because when you fail, you learn. But what happens when you don’t commit, when you choose to not act? Well, nothing.”

There are no wrong choices. It's all just feedback for you to help you make even better career decisions in the future.

How do I know I haven’t already found my calling?

Robert Chen — Thu, 28 Dec 2017 04:41:23 +0000

If you are taking this course, that might be one sign that you haven't found your true calling. Another indication might be if you're working only for the money or to retire as soon as possible.

A calling should be work you enjoy doing for the work itself. A job is work you do for financial rewards or necessity. A career is work that is focused on advancement (Here is the Yale research article noting the difference).

I can’t just quit my job – that seems reckless.

I agree and you don't have to. Transition in the way that makes the most sense for you. There are many opportunities within your existing role and company that can be leveraged when we discuss this during the transition stage.

I have a family, a mortgage and other obligations. What if my dream job doesn’t pay?

Robert Chen — Thu, 28 Dec 2017 04:36:40 +0000

Your dream job should fulfill all of your goals not just your interests or talents. Part of being fulfilled is to make sure all of your needs and wants are met (work-life balance, financial, health, meaning, etc.). You may not know what the end result will look like right now, the idea is to move in the direction based on what you learn about yourself.

How long will it take to complete this course?

Robert Chen — Tue, 26 Dec 2017 22:14:37 +0000

The workshop consists of 10 lessons that can be completed in a week or in a year. The length of time to get quality results depends on how much time you have to devote to completing the exercises and how self-aware you already are. If you're not sure, typically 1-3 months is a good rule of thumb.

As for the time it takes to find your calling, this will depend on how much action you take and how far you are from your dream career. This course is designed to start you off in the "right" direction. You will decide what's "right" by looking at your values, natural interests and aptitudes and other preferences.
